First off, what kind of pipe do you have?
Most sprinkler systems use:
- PVC pipe (white, rigid)
- Poly pipe (black, flexible)
Both are fixable with basic tools and a little patience.
Step 1: Turn Off the Water
Shut off the irrigation water at the main valve or backflow preventer. If you skip this step, you’re gonna get soaked and make a muddy mess.
Step 2: Dig and Expose the Break
Use a shovel or trowel to dig out around the pipe. Give yourself room—at least 6–12 inches of clearance on both sides. Be gentle so you don’t cause more damage.
Pro tip from Mr. Lee: Lay down a tarp nearby and scoop the dirt onto it so it’s easy to backfill later.
Step 3: Cut Out the Damaged Section
Use a PVC cutter or hacksaw for PVC. Use poly pipe cutters for poly.
- Cut clean and square
- Remove about 2–4 inches of damaged pipe (or more if needed)
- Dry out the area—no glue will stick to a muddy, wet pipe
Step 4: Repair It
For PVC Pipe:
- Get a coupling and a short repair pipe section
- Use PVC primer and cement on all connection points
- Slide the parts together, give it a little twist, and hold 10 seconds
- Let cure 30 minutes (or follow product directions)
Alternative: Use a telescoping repair coupling—super handy if you don’t want to cut and measure
For Poly Pipe:
- Use barbed couplings and hose clamps
- Slide the barbed fitting into both ends
- Tighten clamps with a screwdriver or nut driver
- Double-check tightness—poly pipe loves to pop off if not secure
Step 5: Test It
Turn the water back on slowly. Check for:
- Leaks
- Loose fittings
- Proper flow through the zone
If everything looks dry and solid—you’re golden.
Step 6: Backfill the Hole
Fill it back up with the dirt you set aside. Tamp it gently but don’t stomp too hard—you don’t want to crack the pipe again.
When to Call a Pro
Call in help if:
- The pipe keeps breaking (might be root damage or water hammer)
- You can’t find the leak but your zone won’t pressurize
- There’s a leak under a concrete path or patio
