Don\u2019t cut into a live pipe or mess with wires under pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: <strong>Locate and Expose the Valve<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most valves are in a <strong>green valve box<\/strong> buried just below ground level. If you\u2019ve got a master valve or a multi-zone manifold, they might all be in the same box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dig carefully around the box<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clean off mud and debris so you can see the pipe fittings and wires<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: <strong>Label the Wires<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you disconnect anything, <strong>take a photo<\/strong> and <strong>label each wire<\/strong> with tape. Typical wiring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Common wire (usually white)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Zone wire (each zone has a different color)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Mixing these up later can drive you nuts\u2014so label them now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: <strong>Cut Out the Old Valve<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Use a <strong>PVC cutter or hacksaw<\/strong> to carefully cut the pipe on both sides of the valve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make clean, straight cuts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leave at least 3\u20134 inches of pipe on each side so you\u2019ve got room for fittings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If your valve is threaded, you can unscrew it, but most Seattle systems use glued PVC connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 5: <strong>Install the New Valve<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve got two options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A) <strong>Glue-In Valve<\/strong> (PVC)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dry-fit the new valve with new couplings and short pipe sections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use <strong>PVC primer and cement<\/strong> on all joints<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure the <strong>arrow<\/strong> on the valve points in the <strong>direction of water flow<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Let it cure for <strong>30 minutes minimum<\/strong> before testing<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">B) <strong>Threaded Valve with Unions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wrap threads with <strong>Teflon tape<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hand-tighten and finish with pliers\u2014snug, not overtight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Easier for future repairs<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 6: <strong>Reconnect the Wires<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Match each wire to its original terminal on the new valve\u2019s solenoid<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use <strong>waterproof wire connectors<\/strong> (not regular wire nuts)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Twist tight and tuck neatly in the valve box<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 7: <strong>Turn the Water Back On and Test<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Slowly turn the water back on<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test each zone from the controller<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check for leaks, weird noises, or water that won\u2019t stop<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If the valve is wired correctly and installed right, you\u2019ll hear a little click and the zone should turn on and off smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 8: <strong>Backfill the Box<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fill the soil back around the valve box gently.
